Casino wealth and well-being: The tale of two tribes -

A bald eagle takes flight from a tree near Lake Bde Maka Ska. Photo: David Joles/Star Tribune Editor’s note: In August, the Star Tribune published a two-part series on “Indian families broken apart” from a high rate of children placed in foster care. Retired Star Tribune writer Joe Rigert takes a different look at the problem in his new book, “The Dependency Curse: How Reliance on Government and Casinos Damages Native American lives.” Excerpts from the book, published by Amazon, follow: You could call it “The tale of two tribes,” one a tribe of millionaires in Minnesota; the other a less-fortunate tribe in Oregon. Though wildly dissimilar in...

Implementation Of Sports Betting Would Be ‘Tricky’ In Indian Country

The Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes, who share Connecticut’s American Indian casino market, operating gambling resorts in Uncasville and Mashantucket, anxiously anticipate adding legalized sports betting to their host of wagering options. But the tribes say they are not yet certain they would be operating sports betting as a tribal government enterprise under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) – as they do their casinos – or as a commercial venture, taxed and regulated by the state. “We have not begun those discussions in detail but are looking forward to being a lead state,” Chuck Bunnell, Mohegan’s chief of staff, said in an email. “It is premature to speculate on how...

No Dice for Indians, San Diego Reader

Golden Acorn Casino. Will they get unlimited slot machines and will they be house banked? Eight Indian bands in San Diego County now operate casinos in San Diego County, more than in any other county in the nation. And if bands in Jamul and Santa Ysabel have their druthers, that number will soon climb to ten. Before 1983, when the Sycuan band of Kumeyaay Indians opened a bingo parlor on their Dehesa Valley reservation, there were none. Sycuan, soon followed by the Viejas and Barona bands, were among the forerunners in tribal gambling in the United States. But the story started when Seminole Indians opened a bingo hall on a reservation in Broward County, Florida. When the county sheriff...

The Great Casino Loophole

The Great Casino Loophole T wo years after it was supposed to help revitalize Atlantic City, the $2.4 billion Revel casino—all 57 stories of it—is closed. It’s an expensive eyesore that sums up Atlantic City’s decline. Vegas is still a big draw, but it’s an anomaly these days. Destination gambling, as it was once known, is dying: 80 percent of states now have some form of legalized gaming. Some residents don’t like it. As Christopher Caldwell chronicled in these pages (“ House of Cards,” October 6), Massachusetts voters will decide Tuesday whether to repeal outgoing governor Deval Patrick’s casino proposal. But the growth of gaming across America won’t be easy to contain. When it comes to...

Rolling the dice: The pros and cons of Indian gaming Survive and Thrive

Native American tribes entering into the world of Indian gaming have a lot to gain, but it doesn’t come without a gamble. The creation of any major industry or business impacts individuals as well as communities. While some effects may be quick and apparent, others are more subtle and quiet. They can be both external and internal, staying within the framework of the entity in question or stretching out to its surrounding environment. The same can be said for the Indian gaming industry and its effect on the tribes that put their money down on it. The Mashpee Wampanoag’s proposed casino in Taunton prompts a look at the potential positives and negatives of a tribe opening up a major gaming...

Tribal gaming certificate addresses economic reality of Indian reservations , UW News

Tribal gaming certificate addresses economic reality of Indian reservations Managing a casino might not be the first career path envisioned with a degree from the University of Washington. But 22 tribes across Washington state depend on tribal casino resorts to provide jobs, generate revenue to operate tribal governments and promote economic development. So for UW students who call those reservations home – or simply want a job in Indian Country – the gaming industry looms large. That’s the thinking behind a professional program that, for the first time, will be open to UW students this summer: a 10-credit certificate in Tribal Gaming and Hospitality Management. A joint effort of the...

Interior rejected staff advice when scuttling tribes casino - POLITICO

Trump administration officials rejected recommendations from federal experts on Indian gaming policy when they blocked two American Indian tribes from opening a casino in Connecticut last year, documents obtained by POLITICO indicate. The heavily blacked-out documents add to questions about whether Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and his political appointees buckled to lobbying pressure from MGM Resorts International, a gambling industry giant that is planning its own casino just 12 miles from the project proposed by the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes. Interior’s inspector general is investigating the department’s handling of the tribes’ casino application, a spokeswoman told...

Michigan casino update: State, tribes in negotiations on revenue sharing, off-reservation gaming,

LANSING — Millions of dollars in casino revenue sharing and the ability for tribes to open off-reservation casinos could be at play as the state negotiates new compacts with six American Indian tribes. Michigan has agreements with 12 American Indian tribes that operate 22 casinos in the state. Half of those compacts are set to expire Nov. 30. Gov. Rick Snyder spokesman Dave Murray said both sides will continue negotiating beyond Saturday if necessary and that casinos would not have to close if the compact expires. “We've worked hard to build a good working relationship with the tribes and we're optimistic the discussions will be productive,” Murray said in an email....

(Staff photo by Kris Snibbe) Up until the 1980s, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians of Highland, Calif., were dirt poor, with a 75 percent unemployment rate. The tiny tribe lived on a reservation of 740 acres in the San Bernardino hills, mostly in mud huts without electricity or running water. Then they invested in a project known as the San Manuel Indian Bingo...

California’s share of Indian gambling money dwindles, The Sacramento Bee

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, beginning with the recall campaign and on through his two terms in office, repeatedly linked the state’s tribal casino business to state finances. “We want to have the Indian gaming tribes pay their fair share to the state,” Schwarzenegger said during a 2004 news conference, “and it looks like we are on that road.” Today, tribal money is moving in a different direction. A key court decision, a switch in governors and changing casino economics mean that tribal payments to the state’s general fund – which totaled $241 million last year – are beginning to shift elsewhere. Gov. Jerry Brown and the United Auburn Indian Community, which runs one of the country’s...
