James Packer abandons Las Vegas casino dream -

Australian casino mogul James Packer is hanging his Las Vegas casino dream out in the open with a multi-million price tag. The Australian reported that Packer’s Crown Resorts Ltd. has formally abandoned plans to construct a casino in the world’s most famous gambling strip by putting his Las Vegas land on the market for $400 million. Crown owns 18.4 acres (7.4-hectares) of the planned casino site and is leasing the remaining 16.2 acres from the previous owners. The casino operator has hired brokerage CBRE Group to sell the lot where the Alon casino and hotel project was to be built. The site sits opposite the famous Wynn Las Vegas and Encore at Wynn Las Vegas resorts, just north of the...

If Wynn Resorts Is for Sale, Who Would Buy It? -- The Motley Fool

The future of Wynn Resorts ( NASDAQ:WYNN ) could be in doubt as The New York Post reported MGM Resorts ( NYSE:MGM ) may be interested in buying its rival. Although MGM CEO Jim Murren previously said his resort was unlikely to make a play, the resignation of founder Steve Wynn and the sale of all of his stock in the casino giant now makes a takeover bid more palatable. Although the anonymously sourced insiders said it was some "back channel" feelers that were sent out about a bid, there remains doubt whether a play for the whole company is being considered, or perhaps just parts. There could be some high hurdles involved in MGM trying to swallow all of Wynn Resorts. Seemingly complementary...

Economic Troubles Affect the Vegas Strip - The New York Times

LAS VEGAS — For decades, this gambling center seemed nearly immune to the economic swings of the rest of the country. But these days, the city built on excess is seeing a troubling sign: moderation. Gambling revenue and hotel occupancy are down. Resorts are slashing room rates and offering coupons or free nights. Casino operators are firing hundreds of workers, and their stock prices have plummeted since October. Credit is drying up for hotel and condominium projects planned before the slowdown arrived. Even the people still coming to Las Vegas are spending less. Julia Lee, 27, of Los Angeles said she normally brings $10,000 on her trips here to play blackjack. As Ms. Lee picked up show...

Viva Las Vegas: New Casino Game Invention,

Viva Las Vegas: New Casino Game Invention Two Card Joker Poker? 2-Way Monte? Progressive Texas Hold 'Em? Casinos today offer a long list of all sorts of games. While it might seem like casinos are offering exciting new ways for gamblers to make even more money, really they're offering exciting new ways to get you in, sitting, and betting. Like any business, casinos strive to keep profits high, boosting their odds on new and old games alike. In the 1990's, casinos turned their attention to electronic gaming. Las Vegas casinos seek to power their bright lights with renewable energy, Environment, The Guardian

The glittering Las Vegas strip is not an obvious model for energy conservation. Yet hidden above the glowing Eiffel Tower, neon resort awnings and a black pyramid that shines a beam of light into space, is one of the largest rooftop solar arrays in the country. Twenty acres of sun-catching glass sit atop the Mandalay Bay convention center, and when new installations are complete, it will become the biggest rooftop solar array in the US. In recent months, three of Nevada’s largest casino companies – MGM Resorts, Wynn, and Las Vegas Sands – have announced plans to buy and produce more renewable energy for their hotels, a move driven both by increasing demand for responsible energy use from...

Casino Chips as Souvenirs - Las Vegas Message Board - TripAdvisor

I am going on my first trip to Las Vegas in October and I would like to get a casino chip for each place I visit as a souvenir. Can I just buy a single chip from a casino without gambling? Will they let me leave with the chip or do I need to hand it back before I leave the casino? What is the cheapest level of chips that casinos offer? Are the higher value chips nicer to keep as souvenirs? Are there any casinos with particularly nice casino chips that I should keep an eye out for? Sorry if these as silly questions. My hubby collects $1 chips from every casino he has ever been to. Sometimes he has to buy them from the cocktail waitress if he doesn't feel like gambling (if they are not...

What Every Vegas Visitor Should Know - Business Insider

9 things every first-time visitor to Las Vegas should know Before last year, I was a Las Vegas virgin. I had never walked the Strip, taken a ride on the New York New York roller coaster, or even gambled. The only things I knew about Vegas were what I had seen on TV. I ended up having a blast — it's impossible not to in Sin City. But there were quite a few things I didn't realize about Vegas until I went. These are the nine things everyone should know before they travel to Las Vegas for the first time. 1. You can't walk everywhere If you want to walk the Strip, you'll take a lot of walkways above the street. Megan Willett/Business Insider All the hotels are much farther apart than...
