RFID Casino Chips

RFID Casino Chips One of the recent high-tech methods employed by casinos, and chip manufacturers, to deal with counterfeit chips is RFID technology. An RFID chip looks just like a regular one, except it contains an RFID tag embedded inside it that is encoded with its monetary value and other data. It also has a radio device that broadcast secret serial numbers. Special equipment is installed into the casino's computer systems that identifies the legitimate chips and detects the fake ones. Each RFID chip only costs about $2.50 to make, which is about double the price of regular chips. This amount also doesn't include the equipment that needs to be purchased, such as the RFID readers, and...

Collectors Corner: Casino Chips

$28,988.88 for a one dollar casino chip? $100,000 for a one hundred dollar chip?! You bet, especially if it's a rarity from one of the now defunct Las Vegas casinos like the Showboat (1954-2001) or from the legendary Sahara (1952-2011), the last of the casino-hotels frequented by Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack. (See PokerPlayerNewspaper.) Prior to the 1880's - a time when most gambling took place in saloons, riverboats, and gambling houses - bets were placed using gold and silver coins, gold nuggets, gold dust, or anything else of acceptable value. Poker chips were developed as a means of standardizing the values of bets. The earliest chips were often made of bone or scrimshawed ivory (and...

The Life and Death of a Casino Chip, Whitaker Brothers Business Machines

Modern Chip Security Chips these days tend to be made of a clay or ceramic composite, with number markings and a weight of between 8 and 10 grams. The miniscule differences in weight, feel, colour and composition mean that a fraud sticks out to casino staff like a sore thumb. Although chips can look similar – or even identical – to the untrained eye, in reality they’re anything but. Modern chips often also contain unique serial numbers, as well as complex technology such as UV markings, holograms and microdots. Due to the discreet chip technology used in the modern age, we can often only speculate as to the security features of the casino chips that we hold in our hands. What we...

South Korea mint creating casino chips -

The South Korean mint is getting into the casino business. According to the country’s Aju Business Daily media outlet, the official South Korean Minting and Security Printing Corp. will mint casino chips using advanced technology designed to prevent forgery. The chip production was born out of a partnership between the mint and Grand Korea Leisure Co. Ltd. (GKL). GKL is a state-owned entity that operates a number of Seven Luck casinos that are open only to foreigners. The agreement will see the mint use “three-dimensional security technology” as well as sensitive materials found in regular currency that will make the chips almost impossible to counterfeit. Different methods of technology...

What Happens to Expired Poker Chips? - Discount Poker Shop Blog

What Happens to Expired Poker Chips? Did you know that poker chips expire? As with many other things in life, poker chips do in fact have an expiration date. This expiration date is determined not by freshness, as with food, but by the wishes of casino bosses. This date can be as short as a few months or as long as decade or two after the chips are issued. The expiration date for poker chips is issued several months in advance. Because expired chips lose their face value, anyone who still has these chips in circulation after that date will be unable to use them in a game or unable to cash them in. This law of face value loss for expired poker chips was instituted in the late 80s in an...

Counterfeit Casino Chips

Counterfeit Casino Chips Since casino chips are a form of currency, there is always going to be a problem with people creating counterfeit chips in order to steal money from casinos. Casinos have always been very aware of these risks, and put a lot of effort into preventing any losses. Each casino uses a unique set of chips, even if that casino is part of a bigger casino company, and the chips they use have a few security features. Besides simple factors (such as distinct color combinations, highly-specialized markings, and intricate high-resolution artwork), the chips may incorporate advanced technology, such as RFID or ultra-violet markings. Besides physical deterrents, the casinos employ...

Why Do Casinos Use Chips Instead of Cash? - Reasons Why

Why Do Casinos Use Chips Instead of Cash? Chips are the currency of casinos and poker games around the world. Walk into any brick-and-mortar casino and you’ll see more than a few chips. Even the sound they make as they clink together is as timeless as the bright lights of the Vegas Strip. There’s a lot of money in Vegas, but it all starts with those little round chips you see circulating the casino floor. So why do casinos use chips instead of cash? At first, you’d think it would be easier to deal with cold, hard cash. There would be no need to constantly cash in and cash out. The casino wouldn’t have to hire cashiers simply to exchange chips for cash. Things would run easier, wouldn’t they...

Knowing Vegas: What happens to old casino chips?, Las Vegas Review-Journal

Millions of casino chips have been taken out of Las Vegas resorts this year by tourists and local visitors. Hundreds of thousands more expire when a casino, like the Las Vegas Club, closes. But while the final destination of the casino chips in the hands of tourists is anybody’s guess, the fate of expired chips, or ones from casinos on the way out, is more specific. Casino chips are most often sent to their vendors and ground to pieces by large industrial machines, said Karl Bennison, chief of enforcement at the Nevada Gaming Control Board. In the past, chips have also been been thrown in the concrete foundations of other, newer casinos, Bennison said. “It’s covered in our regulations. The...

Man charged with allegedly passing fake casino chips - Las Vegas Sun Newspaper

Friday, July 16, 2004 | 9:26 a.m. A 45-year-old Las Vegas man was arrested Wednesday and charged with allegedly passing counterfeit casino chips at downtown casinos, a crime not attempted often because it's difficult to duplicate the logos on the chips, a gaming official said. Leonard Martin Stone, also known as Leonard Morgan Hairston, was charged by the Nevada State Gaming Control Board with manufacturing and possessing a cheating device and burglary, all felonies. He committed the alleged crimes in December and a warrant was issued for his arrest. According to the police report, Stone passed two counterfeit $25 Palms chips at the Fremont Hotel-Casino on Dec. 30. A cage cashier who was...
