Racinos fuel Ohio's gambling growth while revenue slips in Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia,

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Casino gambling in Ohio is growing faster than in every neighboring state, a analysis found. Indiana casino.

Fueling the growth has been Ohio’s slots-only racinos at seven race tracks, leading to continued gains statewide while gambling revenues fell in the last year for Indiana, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

The busiest of Ohio’s casino or racino operations is now Northfield’s Hard Rock Racino, where gambling revenue – what is kept by the house after paying out winnings – was up $38.2 million in the last 12 months over the same period two years ago.

This was the third sharpest two-year increase among the 44 commercial casinos and racinos in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana and Michigan, found in reviewing data from each state. Only two much larger casinos in eastern Pennsylvania grew faster in terms of dollars wagered.

“The racinos (in Ohio) have done really well," said Alan Silver, an assistant professor of restaurant, hotel and tourism at Ohio University who formerly worked in the casino industry. "They have added a lot of amenities. They are in the suburbs. You don’t have to drive very far. They have done a good job with marketing.”

Scroll below for a closer look at the trends in Ohio and regionally.

Note: A chart at the bottom of this story includes revenue trends for each of the 44 commercial casinos and racinos in the five states. Some state data is reported by calendar year. Others follow state fiscal years ending each June. For consistency, converted all data to fiscal years ending each June.

Ohio and Michigan were the only states to post gains in the last 12 months over the same period a year ago.

Combined revenue for Ohio’s eight racinos and four casinos was up 2.2 percent in the last 12 months to $1.7 billion. The 2.2 percent increase followed a 6.6 percent increase in 2015-16, the first full year of operation for all of Ohio’s racinos.

The last of the two racinos – Hollywood Mahoning Valley and Hollywood Dayton – opened in late summer 2014.

The leader regionally is Pennsylvania, with $3.1 billion from 12 casinos. Indiana, with 11 casinos and two racinos, had $2.1 billion.

Pennsylvania is the second largest commercial gambling market nationally (behind Nevada), Indiana sixth and Ohio ninth, according to May data compiled by the Center for Gaming Research at UNLV. This excludes tribal casinos.

While Ohio's racinos have led the overall growth in Ohio, revenue is down at the Jack Cleveland Casino (formerly Horseshoe) in downtown Cleveland.

Revenue was down $22.2 million, or 10.2 percent, over the last 12 months versus where it was for the former Horseshoe Cleveland during the same time period in 2014-15.

Just three casinos, all in neighboring states, are down by more over the two-year period, found. Revenue in Cleveland slipped $8.2 million in 2015-16 and $14 million in 2016-17.

Jack Entertainment said the monthly revenue reports released by the state are just one measure and they don't yet reflect changes made in the last year aimed at long-term growth.

"Our recent volumes are exactly where we expect them to be and moving in the right direction," Gayle Joseph, vice president of communications, said in an email.

"For example, Jack Cleveland has been performing strong year-over-year with June showing slot AGR (adjusted gross revenue kept after paying out winnings) growth of 8.3 percent and we expect this trend to continue in this direction."

Among all 44 casinos and racinos in Ohio and neighboring states, just two grew faster over the last 12 months in terms of dollars than the Miami Valley racino in southwest Ohio and the Hard Rock Rocksino just south of Cleveland,

Revenue was up $12.7 million last year at Miami Valley and $11.9 million at the Hard Rock.

Hollywood Mahoning Valley posted the eighth largest increase ($9.1 million).

The biggest gainers were Sugarhouse in Philadelphia (up $15.8 million) and Parx in Bensalem, Pa. (up $13. million).
