Bangor Fire Department Holds 5th Annual Chili Cook Off
Some of the area’,s best chili and chowder cooks went home Saturday night with bragging rights. Hollywood casino.
The cook-off at the Hollywood Casino in Bangor was all for a great cause.
“,Pretty good competition. Real stiff competition. We’,ve got a lot of amateurs as well.”,
Local restaurants and soup aficionados went head to head Saturday at the Bangor Firefighters fifth annual chili and chowder cook off.
“,I’,ve had a few people come and say you gotta go try this one, because it’,s really good,”, said Emery. “,It’,s probably more of a crowd than we had last year, and that was just under 300 people.”,
Deciding among 37 entries, guests along with a panel of judges submitted votes for their favorite.

TV5’,s Taylor Kinzler and Brandon Doyen emceed the event.
“,It’,s a perfect time of year for it. It’,s not the dead of winter when, you know, it’,s cold and people are out doing other events. It’,s kind of in that swing season. There’,s plenty of parking here in the garage, and come on in, and try your luck at some slots and enjoy some tasty food,”, said Emery.
Winning first place in the chili category was Moe’,s Barbeque. Husson University came in first place for chowder.
Prizes were also awarded for amateur chefs.
Proceeds benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Maine.
“,We raise about ten percent of the money that we raise for the year tonight alone, and we’,re hoping to hit a five thousand dollar goal tonight,”, said Emery
“,Well first it’,s for a good cause, so that will always make you feel good, and just the community coming in together,”, said Joseph Smith, head chef at 11 Central in Bangor. “,Chili and chowder, I love eating both so it’,s a win win. No losing.”,
Smith is back for a second year with his corn and elk chowder.
“,The whole process. One pot, lots of bacon. Organic corn and carrots. Locally sourced bacon. It was a blast to make. I love it. I love making it,”, said Smith.
The money raised helps kids like 8-year-old Evan Riley of Thomaston who’,s a bit of a chili connoisseur himself.
