Used casino chips. Davie: Miramar man accused, again, of stealing casino chips - Sun Sentinel

A Miramar man -- who claims to be a security guard -- has been accused, again, of stealing casino chips, Davie police said. Casino chips.

This time detectives say Del'Jimmyo Wright Johnson, 21, followed a woman from the Seminole Classic Casino, 4150 N. State Road 7, in Hollywood, to her home in Davie and forced his way inside to grab her purse containing more than $8,000 in casino chips and cash.

He had been free on bond following an arrest in the June 13 theft of $8,500 in casino chips at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, spokesman Gary Bitner said.

"He basically grabbed chips off a table," he said.

On Wednesday, casino surveillance video showed Wright-Johnson wearing a thin white T-shirt and gray shorts while watching a woman play Baccarat. When she left the casino at 6:12 a.m., he followed her out the door and into the parking lot, the video showed.

The woman later told detectives she felt she was being followed as she drove home. Once she arrived, a man dressed in a white T-shirt and gray shorts yelled, "Excuse me, ma'am," according to the arrest report.

She ran to her front door and opened it but before she could lock it behind her the man pulled the door open, pushed her down, pulled a blue purse off her shoulder and ran to a black, four-door car, the report stated.

The purse contained $200 in cash and a yellow zippered change pouch with 24 chips worth $8,092 among other items, police said.

The woman ran after him but stopped when he put the vehicle in reverse because she was afraid he might hit her, police said. She called 911.

Wright-Johnson returned to the casino later that morning and tried to cash in chips worth $2,097. The cashier asked him for more identification and Seminole police detained him, the report stated.

During questioning, Wright-Johnson denied robbing anyone and said he was cashing in chips from his winnings earlier in the day, detectives said.

Investigators say they checked his car and found a yellow, zippered pouch inside that belonged to the woman. Wright-Johnson was arrested, the report stated.

At his bond court appearance Thursday, Wright-Johnson said he was student and a security officer, but Broward Judge John Hurley ordered him held without bond.

"It appears to be the second time you've hit up people at the [casino]," he said. "It looks like you prey on people out there."

Bitner said Wright-Johnson was not a security guard at the casino and added that stealing from a casino is always a bad idea.

"It's crazy for people to think that they can get away with anything at a casino because there's more cameras per square foot there than any place," he said. "There's nothing that goes undetected."
