The basics of online roulette
Playing online roulette is exactly like real roulette, with all the same elements you know – the roulette wheel, table and ball. Casino online roulette.
So just like in the land-based version, an online European roulette wheel is made up of sections numbered from 0 to 36, while the American version also has a 00 section. The 0 and 00 sections are green, and the rest alternate between black and red. Bets are placed on the table. The wheel is spun and the ball bounces (in this case virtually) until it settles in place. The number and colour of the section where it lands determines who wins.
How to play online roulette
If you’re familiar with the basics of roulette, and the game’s many betting options, then you’re ready to get started. If not, no worries, you can always read up on roulette strategies or have a look at each game’s instruction to view the various betting options available.
Once you’re ready to play, it’s time to find an online casino that specialises in roulette and select a game. Most online casinos will let you play roulette from both the download software as well as direct from their website, but unlike pokies, keep in mind, the options are generally far less for mobile play.
To select a game, go to the main menu and find the tab ‘Roulette’. This will either open a new tab or show you a dropdown menu with all of that casino’s games. Click on the name of the game you want.
Once you’ve selected a game, the game table will open. From there, most roulette games have a similar layout.
Now all you have to do is set the game in motion:
Click on the chip for the amount you want to bet
Then click on the place on the table where you want to place this bet (red/black/number/corner/split etc.), an additional chip will be added each time you click this spot, if you want to up your bet
Make any additional bets you want to make (you can make more than one bet)
If you want to undo your last move, click ‘Undo’ (if you change your mind again, click ‘Redo’)
If you want to delete all bets you’ve just placed, click ‘Clear’
Some games may have a ‘Double bet’ option, to instantly double your bet
If you liked your last bet, and simply want to issue it again, click ‘Repeat’
Once you’re ready to set the wheel in motion, click ‘Spin’
Best online roulette casino
All of the online roulette games at the casinos we’ve recommended are great in terms of the final action – with a wheel (complete with graphics and sound effects) reminiscent of Vegas’ best.
Now all that remains is a little dose of luck! If you hit a winning number, colour or combination, results will be displayed direct on your screen, and you’ll see the payout immediately.
Online roulette bets
While it’s perfectly acceptable to make a “standard” single number or single colour bet, it’s also good to know that online roulette offers all the same betting options more seasoned players may prefer.
The full online betting options include:
1. Inside bets – These are bets placed on the “inside” of the table, meaning on the numbers that match the sections and colours of the roulette wheel. Inside bets include:

Double Street bet – A bet placed on six numbers (two adjacent rows)
Split bet – A bet on two adjacent numbers as they appear on the board
Quad bet – Betting on four adjacent numbers as they appear on the board
Basket bet – Betting on 00 (American Roulette only), 0, 1, 2, and 3
2. Outside bets –These are bets placed in the areas on the outer edge of the board. Outside bets include:
Colour bet – A bet placed on either all red numbers or all black numbers

Call or Neighbour bet – Unique to online casinos, this type of bet refers to betting on adjacent numbers according to their position on the wheel, rather than their position on the table layout
What is Live Roulette?
Fun as online roulette is, playing on a simulated wheel with a random number generator just doesn’t compare to the adrenaline and excitement of playing at a real life casino.
If this sounds familiar, you’ll be happy to know there is a way to get all the fun and excitement of real life roulette, right down to the attractive dealers and the rattling of the ball as it clatters around the reel, without having to leave the house.
Live roulette is growing in popularity and it’s easy to see why. When you play live roulette you play remotely via video link at a real life bricks and mortar casino. This means you get to watch a real wheel spin, and you can chat to a real life person at the other end.
For many roulette lovers this takes a lot of the uncertainty out of the picture. You know the game isn’t rigged because you can see a physical wheel spinning, and you get to enjoy the casino atmosphere and buzz that you just won’t find playing a computer generated game.
As long as you have a reasonably up to date computer and a fast Internet connection, you shouldn’t have any difficulty playing live roulette and it’s offered at most online casinos so it’s pretty easy to find. There are even multiple versions of online roulette so you should be able to play whatever version you’re most comfortable with.
While online roulette is still great fun, for those who love the real deal, live roulette gives you the best of both worlds by placing you right in the middle of the action, from anywhere in the world you might be.
There are plenty of different variations of roulette out there, and the great thing about playing online is that you can access variations you just don’t find at land-based casinos in Australia.
Here are the three most popular roulette variations:
American: American roulette is basically the same as every other kind of roulette except that it has an extra 0. This means you get the choice of betting on 0 or 00 and the house edge is slightly higher, making it a less popular choice for many players.
Online casino european roulette
French: This variation of roulette has a lower house edge and only a single 0. The layout of the table is also slightly different to that of European and American roulette.
European: European roulette has 37 pockets including one 0 and it’s the most popular variation of online roulette. It has a few nice betting features including the La Partage feature where if there are no winning pockets, half of the player’s wager is returned to them.
How to win real money playing roulette
Roulette is primarily a game of chance but like other games of chance there are a few ways you can boost up your odds and make your experience a profitable as well as an enjoyable one.
Here are a few of our top tips to help you increase your chances of winning real money:
Practice, practice, practice: It’s a cliché but it’s true, practice does make perfect and the more time you spend getting to grips with the game, learning the different versions and building up your confidence, the better you’re going to be able to play when it comes down to the real deal.
Study up: Different bets come with different odds, depending on where you are playing and the version of roulette you choose. This is where is really does pay to do some research and read up on the different betting strategies out there. The best strategy for you will depend on your bankroll, personal preferences and desired outcome.
Manage your bankroll: Once you do start winning it can be tempting to keep betting bigger and bigger but this is a surefire way to lose in the end. If you are on a winning streak, always try to put away a certain percentage of your profits and don’t waste money chasing your losses.
